If you’ve ever wondered whether your website is actually pulling its weight, this is a 10-minute check.

Most WA small business owners we audit overestimate their site. They look at it on desktop after a coffee. Their customers see it on a four-year-old phone, on patchy reception, between two other jobs.

That gap is where leads die.

Quick answer

A WA small business website needs four things to do its job: load fast on mobile, look trustworthy at a glance, make it clear what you do and where, and give one obvious next step. The 16 checks below are grouped into those four sections — tackle them one section at a time.

1. Speed & mobile

1a. Loads in under 3 seconds on mobile. Test at pagespeed.web.dev. Anything over 4 seconds and you’re losing about a third of mobile visitors before they see your homepage.

1b. No layout shift while loading. If buttons jump around as the page loads, customers mis-tap. Frustration tax.

1c. Phone number is tappable. On mobile, tapping should open the dialler. If it just selects text, it’s broken. We’ve fixed this on Joondalup businesses and watched call volume go up 20% the same week.

1d. Address opens Google Maps. A clickable address should drop the customer straight into directions. Bonus: Google notices this too, and it helps your local ranking a little.

1e. Forms work on mobile without zoom. Tap each field. If your customer has to pinch-zoom to type, the form’s dead. We see this constantly on Squarespace sites built without mobile testing.

2. Trust signals

2a. Real photos of your team or work. Stock photos read as “I don’t trust this business.” A Mandurah builder doubled his quote acceptance after replacing stock photography with on-site project shots taken on his phone.

2b. Visible WA address or service area. Customers want to know you’re local. “Servicing Perth & northern suburbs” is enough.

2c. ABN visible somewhere. Footer, About page, contact page — anywhere. Small signal, real trust lift.

2d. Reviews or testimonials with full names. “John D.” reads fake. “John Davies, Booragoon” reads real.

2e. Clear About page with a face. A photo of you (or the team) on a page that says who you are and why you do this. The single most-skipped page on small business websites.

3. Clarity

3a. The 5-second test. Show your homepage to someone for 5 seconds. Cover it. Ask: what do they do, where, and what would you do next? If they can’t answer all three, you’ve got a clarity problem.

3b. Service pages aren’t a wall of jargon. Short paragraphs. Bullet points. Aussie English, not industry-speak. Read it out loud — if you wouldn’t say it in person, don’t put it on the page.

3c. Pricing or “from $” indication on at least one page. Owners hate this one. They worry showing prices kills leads. The opposite is true. “From $1,500” filters out the wrong customers and pre-qualifies the right ones.

3d. One clear primary next step per page. Every page should have one obvious next move for the visitor. Book. Call. Quote. Not three side-by-side. The customer who has to choose between options usually chooses none.

3e. A 24/7 way to enquire. Form, chat widget, callback request. After-hours enquiries are real money for tradies — the customer at 9pm Sunday looking for a Monday plumber is high-intent.

4. Maintenance

4a. Secure connection turned on. Your web address must start with https:// (note the s) so a little padlock shows in the browser bar. If it starts with http:// without the s, Chrome warns visitors with a “Not Secure” message and you lose them before they read a word. The fix is free — most web hosts include it, you just have to switch it on.

Score yourself

Count your ticks: ___/16

  • 12+ — Top third for WA small business sites
  • 8–11 — Average. Fix the lowest-scoring section first
  • Under 8 — Your site is actively costing you jobs

What to fix first

If you scored low on Speed & mobile, start there — it’s the biggest revenue leak. If trust signals are missing, photos and an honest About page move the needle within a fortnight. Clarity issues take longer because they need rewriting.

FAQ

How fast is “fast enough” for a small business website?

Under 3 seconds on a 4G mobile connection is the line. Under 2 seconds puts you ahead of 80% of WA small business sites.

Do I need a new website or can I fix mine?

Usually fix, not rebuild. A rebuild makes sense only if your site is 6+ years old, isn’t mobile-first, or your business has changed shape.

How important is the website vs Google Business Profile?

For most WA service businesses, the Google Business Profile sends more leads. The website matters for trust and conversion once they land. If you’ve got 30 minutes, spend them on the Google Business Profile first — here’s that audit →.
